Parent-Teacher Engagement: Essential Communication Tools

Communicating with Parents: A Two-Way Street

As a teacher, I believe that building a strong relationship with parents is essential for student success. I know this from my own teaching experience and from the research. There are multiple benefits of parent-teacher engagement, including improved student attendance, behavior, and academic performance. When parents are involved in their children's education, they are more likely to be aware of what's happening in the classroom and to be able to support their children's learning at home. They are also more likely to be advocates for their children's education.

There are several ways to communicate with parents. I've found that traditional methods like phone calls, emails, and face-to-face meetings are still effective. But there are also a number of new tools that can make it easier to communicate with parents and keep them informed about their children's progress.

Technology Tools for Parent-Teacher Communication

Here are a few of my favorite tools for parent-teacher communication:

  • ClassDojo: ClassDojo is a free app that allows teachers to share updates about their students with parents. Parents can receive notifications about their child's behavior, academic progress, and upcoming events.
  • Remind: Remind is another free app that allows teachers to send text messages to parents. This is a great way to send quick reminders about upcoming events or to share important information with parents.
  • Google Classroom: Google Classroom is a free online platform that allows teachers to share assignments, announcements, and other resources with students and parents. Parents can also use Google Classroom to communicate with teachers.
  • Seesaw: Seesaw is a free app that allows teachers to share students' work with parents. Parents can use Seesaw to view their child's assignments, projects, and other work.

These are just a few of the many tools available to help teachers communicate with parents. The best tool for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. The important thing is to find a tool that you're comfortable using and that is effective for communicating with parents.

Making the Most of Parent-Teacher Communication

Here are a few tips for making the most of parent-teacher communication:

  • Be clear and concise. When communicating with parents, it's important to be clear and concise. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that parents may not understand.
  • Be specific. When sharing information with parents, be specific. Don't just say that your child is doing well in math. Instead, say that your child is excelling in multiplication and division.
  • Be positive. Parents want to hear good things about their children. When communicating with parents, focus on the positive aspects of their child's behavior and academic progress.
  • Be responsive. When parents reach out to you, be responsive. Respond to their emails, phone calls, and text messages promptly.
  • Be open to feedback. Parents are experts on their children. Be open to their feedback and suggestions.

Effective parent-teacher communication is essential for student success. By using the available tools and following these tips, you can build strong relationships with parents and create a positive learning environment for your students.
